When I first heard that, I felt like the Christmas Story movie..."I tripple dog dare ya!"

The thing about a 'dare' is that it's not only a challenge, but it's something people choose to go after or choose to ignore it. (There are some challenges in life we cannot go around, and we may stay there until we get over it- I.e. Breaking up, passing a class, illness, a loss of a loved one). Of course if we choose to ignore it, we have nothing to lose. But if we step up to these dares, we are putting ourselves in a vulnerable position- we can win or lose. With a right mind and common sense, we would also step up to dares that will only benefit us...or else its gambling.

Have you ever won a dare before, any kind of dare?
(Think about it...)

Ha! It's fun, right?
It's fun, because its a decision we made that others won't- because of fear. It feels good, because it's an accomplishment. The best thing about winning a 'good' dare, is that it decreases fearness, it eases the tension of the next challenge to come.

I've been dared to go after my passion. After spending time thinking about what I really want to do with my life, three things came up: food, fellowship, and artistic expression. I've always TALKED about owning a restaurant. I TALKED and TALKED about it so much without any action, that I would burry it in the back of my mind. I didn't want to be 'that person' who does all that TALKING, and no walking... so I kept it to myself.

We always encourage each other to do 'whatever makes you happy". But no one's actually DARED me before, and I don't think I'm going to back down either...plus I have God on my side!
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Throwback of the Day

Sounds of Blackness- Optimistic

Michael's auction items...

If I could...I would buy...

3.) type='html'>So I tried to make a Podcast last night. What are they, you ask? A podcast is an episode-like file for digital media. So a podcast can be used to record lectures, presentations, radio shows, books. These files can be downloaded to your computers, media players, and/or distributed through your web feeds. And as a listener, you can subscribe to the podcast and be notified as soon as new a 'episode' is published. Ha ha!
Today, Friday, was a stressful day, I had to ask for patience. (We can talk about that off line). But I will say this...Work can be demanding, but it can be the people around you that can make it the best or worst experience.

I'm on my way to the Black History concert at EBC. They allowed me to be the photographer! Ow!

So tomorrow...Day 4, I will be in church again at 10:30am to help with an IT class teaching about presentations. I ASKED if they needed help, and I RECEIVED an invite to help. It all started when they asked for blog entries about the Inauguration, so I c&p'd (copy and pasted, I made that up) my Inauguration blog post and sent it to the church webmaster, as well as some photos. Tomorrow, we'll see what the meeting brings.
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Lent Day 2 2.26.09

Day 2
Day 2 hasn't been that bad. Thursdays are usually difficult because most of my friends and peers go to happy hour. We have these two great spots we go to faithfully. Both have live music, and they play some classics...and they JAM too!
The real challenge starts tomorrow...for tomorrow is "I don't care Fridays" and also the weekend begins. Unfortunately I don't have plans at night other than going out which I made plans to do before my decision to participate in Lent.
So I don't know what to do. Do I not go out, and break plans...what would that imply to my friends? Or do I go out and face temptation, and not allow it to hinder my great time I will spend with my friends this weekend? (to be cont'd)

My thoughts are: If I quit eating meat on monday, would it make sense to go to a BBQ Cook-Off the next day? (We'll get to the conclusion later)

God works in mysterious ways. I say this because...lately I've been trying to get more involved with church. So I've been leaving work "early" (like 6:30p) just to make it to church programs before it ends! (Jk, but I'm always late). Today- 2.26.09 I made it to the men's group meeting, I was only 20 minutes late this time-ha! And as I walk into the meeting place, late...I hear orchestra-like music coming from the sanctuary, I stopped to look in there, and it was an orchestra :p. The Black History Month concert is tomorrow, Friday 2/27, I completely forgot!

Now the question is: Do I attend this concert I've been wanting to go, or do I go out with friends and dodge temptation? PRIORITIES!

The decision wasn't hard once I thought about it after the men's group meeting (that ended at 9pm)...because I sat in the sanctuary for two hours as I heard the choir rehearse. That's when I decided to stick with my plans...and attend this concert- which happens once a year! I talked to the music director too, he's going to let me be the photographer! OW!

The hardest days of fasting... and I find myself in church two days in-a-row, and then tomorrow for the concert. It looks like I'm prioritizing and refocusing already.

Butch Berry's World

Lent! So today is Ash Wednesday. And I have decided to participate. I thought it was a Catholic practice, and apparently everyone else did/does too. Except my church Emmanuel Baptist, who is open to anything that encourages ones relationship with God and improving spirituality. I'm not aware of other Baptist churches involved...if so please share...if NOT, please share. I'm glad to know that an event like this can involve all the Christian practices. If I wasn't involved with EBC like I am now, I probably wouldn't have known either.

So Ash Wednesday is the kick-off day for LENT! OW!!!! What Lent is in a nut shell is...
"The number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for His ministry by facing the temptations that could lead him to abandon his mission and calling. Christians today use this period of time for introspection, self examination, and repentance.... It is really a preparation to celebrate God’s marvelous redemption at Easter, and the resurrected life that we live, and hope for, as Christians." - Dennis Bratcher (http://www.cresourcei.org/)

I decided to participate in Lent for two reasons 1.) prioritize, re-evalute...time to step it up...be more responsible, and increase my relationship with God...and Lent seems like the best time to 'Begin again more intelligently' and 2.) It was my Girlfriend's idea! There's something about a woman who can bring you closer to Christ...

I've 'fasted' before...for about 5 months, and I've never been as healthy since. In the summer I fasted for 5 months. And with this new "free time" i began working out everyday, studying, I had worked 2 jobs...in all I became less distracted. I actually woke up at 6am naturally, and gained a solid 15 lbs...like I have horrible shoulders, but since I was working out...I was able to do pull ups with weights hanging off my waist. The first part of the fast was the hardest...but then I got used to it, I became less tempted.

But after those 5 months it was business as usual...and since then I've been handling that same business. So from 19 to 25...a good 6 years of 'experience' I feel like it's time to get a promotion...time to handle some new responsibilities. Shoot I'm almost 30.

So this is my 40 day Fast for Lent, I would encourage you to join me in this experience. Blog me, let me know how you're doing, and check up on me once in a while.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tritonlb.blogspot.com/2009/02/lent-im-fasting-too-day-1.html' title='Lent! Since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. The number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for His ministry by facing the temptations that could lead him to abandon his mission and calling. Christians today use this period of time for introspection, self examination, and repentance. This season of the year is equal only to the Season of Advent in importance in the Christian year, and is part of the second major grouping of Christian festivals and sacred time that includes Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost.

Lent has traditionally been marked by penitential prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Some churches today still observe a rigid schedule of fasting on certain days during Lent, especially the giving up of meat, alcohol, sweets, and other types of food. Other traditions do not place as great an emphasis on fasting, but focus on charitable deeds, especially helping those in physical need with food and clothing, or simply the giving of money to charities. Most Christian churches that observe Lent at all focus on it as a time of prayer, especially penance, repenting for failures and sin as a way to focus on the need for God’s grace. It is really a preparation to celebrate God’s marvelous redemption at Easter, and the resurrected life that we live, and hope for, as Christians.

New Videos

Welcome to Heartbreak...(don't adjust your computers)

Day and Nite- Kid Cudi

"President' replaces the N-Word...

on a lighter note....this is hilarious! Probably because there are more important issues to worry about.

I'm upset about this whole thing too, but the damage is done. People love to push the envelope with the 1st Amendment. Fox is known for it, and it probably won't be last time they do it. People are going to get mad, then Fox gains popularity (good or bad)...then the cycle begins again.

And now Rev. With it goes his American dream.
"I left my family and lost four years with them. I will ask them to forgive me," he said.
Pablo is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who came to the United States to support his wife and five sons back home. When he arrived, construction jobs were plentiful. Over the last year, he says, he's worked three days.
He recently boarded a bus with a one-way ticket home, paid for by the Guatemalan consulate in Los Angeles. If I had to describe it in one word...I couldn't. It was more than 'historic' more than 'unifying' more than a 'relief'...it was more than 'cold' (it was freezing, so it's less than cold).
This by far, has been one of the greatest moments I have experienced...so far.
It started with Sunday's concert on the Lincoln memorial. The nation's leading celebs were there speaking or singing: Denzel, Steve Carell (sp), Jamie Foxx, Tiger Woods, Bruce Springsteen, Garth Brooks, Usher, Mary j Blidge, Beyonce...and STEVIE WONDER!
It was an amazing sight, especially to see Garth Brooks getting 'soulful' with "Shout" and the crowd (approx 1 million people) jumping simultaneously and kneeling on "...a lil bit softer now, a lil bit softer now..." No one caused problems with the tight spaces and the bumping and shoe stomping.
With this past week being such a historic moment for us all, everyone came out the woods to make sure they came to DC. It was great to see faces I haven't seen in a while, and catching up with old friends...and actually being able to share this special moment with them.

1.20.09
3:00 am: alarm goes off, SNOOZE
3:15 am: we get up and get ready, we are set to meet the group at 3:30a at the metro station
3:25 am: Randy and Brent walk-in from partying, and sees us getting ready to go to the inauguration.
"Are you coming?" I asked
"I might meet yall down there..." Brent replied
" I'll go." Randy said
Brent interjected "...well if he can go, then so can I...let's do this."
3:30 am: We're out the door
3:35 am: the metro hasn't open yet
4:00 am: we get on the second train, because the VERY first train that morning was already full to capacity! (PHOTOS)
4:30 am: We get off at China-town/ Gallery place (due to Jennings great leadership, ha) and followed the crowd. Because there were road blocks it was difficult to know exactly where the entry points were located.
4:45 am: We found this 'check point' that would let us in around 7am. It wasn't until...
6:30 am: when an officer let us know that this isn't the check point and that we have to go to the other side
6:31 am: the group of six, turned to a group of four. We sat in the cold 10 degree weather for hours, I couldn't blame the two for going home and watching everything from the comfort of their couch. I was about to head back with them, but I didn't come to DC to watch it on tv. Fortunately while we wondered for 40 days and 40 nights we found a convenient store that sold hand warmers $.99/ each...we put down $10 and bought some fruits snacks, and we were set to go!
9:30 am: after being directed three different ways by three different officers, traveling through an expressway tunnel, and an expressway exit ramp...we ended up on the other side of the mall...WE MADE IT! Now all we have to do here is wait...in the cold-again.
Just being apart of the 2 million people that day was great. Being able to look ahead and behind and actually, PHYSICALLY seeing 2 million people all united for the same purpose, was a great feeling.
Obama's swearing in was emotional (call me 'sensitive')...it finally happened. Until 1/20/09, I couldn't fully accept that this man is about to be the President of the United States of America. The same country that counted blacks as 3/5 human.
12:00 pm: Now, it's official, I witnessed Barack Obama become the 44th President.
I'm glad I didn't turn back! Thank God, we came across those hand warmers, because I would definitely have some fingers and toes removed from frost-bite. I'm happy I got to experience this with my better-half and my best friend. If I had to do it all over again...I would (but better prepared)

Pray for the US!
Obama has a lot of promises to keep, and expectations to uphold. Let's keep our government officials in our prayers.

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

If you don't believe, now you should...

Am I Really Going to be Doing This for the Rest My Life? I have an idea where I would like to be, but only if it's in God's will.

My pastor ironically addressed this issue last Sunday (1/18). He compared God's plan to his GPS application on his iPhone... Considering all our thoughts and actions are done with good will :)...God will guide us along His journey, from point A to point B. We can't look ahead and see the entire destination, but we will know when the next move will be, once we get to point B. This is where faith is essential...in those difficult times where getting to point B takes longer than we would like. With our personal will, we can choose to complain, and delay our Journey or stay in the faith and overcome challenges with God. Keeping the faith is the most difficult.

I guess it can be easy to forget that we are placed in different situations for a reason. When we forget, that's when we worry and complain a little bit more...i.e. Part 1. We also forget how we could always be in a worse situations in our lives. Even something as small as the millions of people getting laid off...at least we have severance packages, unemployment checks, and other support programs that give us some cushion to fall back on...instead of a cardboard box, and not knowing when/where our next meal is coming.
We have to remember that the imperfect government, those left-overs in the fridge, the boring job, and the noisy neighbors aren't that bad...and if we actually surrender our personal desires and let God lead our way, our worries and complaints can be disregarded. Of course our journey won't be easy, challenges will come our way, and we will be discouraged...we have to remind each other that He has something greater waiting for us.

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tritonlb.blogspot.com/2009/01/am-i-really-going-to-be-doing-this-for.html' title='Am I Really Going to be Doing This for the Rest My Life? Now, I know no one is more righteous than the other or can actually place judgment upon another, but this event did cause my mind to wonder, as my eyebrows rose while reading this story.

So this is what went through my head today... (at the same time being the least judgmental as possible; haha, for those who actually know me.)

My initial reaction, was 'Wow...Detroit, it's always something" and that 'something' is disappointment. This city is literally in the worst position, without a natural disaster involved, and the last thing I would expect is the church to participate in such a political disaster, by displaying 3 Big SUVs in the most sacred portion of the church...the pulpit. In some churches, women are not even allowed in the pulpit.

The Pastor is quoted to say:

"We have never seen as midnight an hour as we face this week," the Rev. Charles Ellis told several thousand congregants at a rousing service at Detroit's Greater Grace Temple. "This week, lives are hanging above an abyss of uncertainty as both houses of Congress decide whether to extend a helping hand."

Now I'm no Theology major, I barely passed Psychology, nor am I anywhere near the perfect Christian, but I do know that Congress does not have 'lives hanging above an abyss of uncertainty', they (the auto industry) put themselves there. And whatever happens, will be in God's will...not Congress. We are directed, in the Bible, to pray for our leaders and officials...not TO OUR LEADERS and OFFICIALS.

Ironically one GM, one Chrysler and one Ford, all HYBRID vehicles were placed in the pulpit. Ironically these are the same three companies that are in need of a financial bail out, and their brand spankin' new, eco-friendly vehicles are donated to the church for display. Symbols of the Big Three were placed in the pulpit...the pulpit. I'm no Marketing Exec (yet), but that is called product placement...and my gut says that belongs in movies, and commercials.

So now it makes me think on another level...can this be seen as how much our world depends on earthly materials? That even the church finds it necessary to actually have SUVs parked right next to the pastor. I do not actually believe the church was praying to these vehicles, and maybe the news article did not do the church service any justice. But I would hope that the auto-workers were being prayed for, and not Congress' decision for the bailout. Which would then mean these SUVs served no actual purpose to the congregation, because auto-workers have been in distress long before the church service.

Lastly, if you haven't felt me yet...Our nation's Big Three cannot save us...but there is the real BIG THREE that will...and we call them the Holy Trinity (The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit)...no SUV can fill that space, especially in the pulpit.

Tritonslostboy

www.tritonlb.blogspot.com

Congrats Lil' Wayne

So I wrote the previous blog a couple days ago...before I found out Wayne is nominated for 8 Grammy's this year. Finally talent is getting recognized! No more of that "Crazy in Love" and "Ring the Alarm" hollering and screaming all the dang time. I can actually enjoy her voice for the majority of her album. Before, all I had was "Me, Myself, and I" and "Emotional" ( I sound real weak right now, but I'd rather listen to a woman's voice in my ear than a dude, if I choose to listen to R&B).

There is no one, today (that is sane and drug free) that has the talent that's even close enough to hold a candle to...NOT ONE.

So why am I now "open" about this? First, it was this album, and then I saw this "Single Ladies" video. I used to ignore the song, just because it was another hollering and screaming song...but this video is amazing, by far her best video.

Since 1998, with "No, no, no", she hasn't stopped the hustle, and obviously hasn't looked down either...10 years going strong, keep it up.

I watch it on mute sometimes...the choreography is great ;)

This is where she got her inspiration...which is even more awesome!

HAT'S OFF TO YOU...

That Darn McDonald's Commercial: Please Hold the Black Face

Ugh...this darn McDonald Commercial. One less "shuck-n-jive" commercial won't hurt us, nor decrease McDonald's sales.

Let's not forget, we are already genetically pre-disposed to chicken anyway, haha, just kidding...halfway.

Thank you McDonalds for the McNuggets, but please hold the Black Face...thanks.

Slaves Helped Build the White House

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In January, President-elect Barack Obama and his family will make history, becoming the first African-American first family to move into the White House -- a house with a history of slavery. In fact, the legacy of American presidents owning slaves goes all the way back to George Washington.

A carpenter's roll from 1795 includes the names of five slaves named Tom, Peter, Ben, Harry and Daniel.
3 of 3 Twelve American presidents owned slaves and eight of them, starting with Washington, owned slaves while in office. Almost from the very start, slaves were a common sight in the executive mansion. A list of construction workers building the White House in 1795 includes five slaves - named Tom, Peter, Ben, Harry and Daniel -- all put to work as carpenters. Other slaves worked as masons in the government quarries, cutting the stone for early government buildings, including the White House and U.S. Capitol. According to records kept by the White House Historical Association, slaves often worked seven days a week -- even in the hot and humid Washington summers.

Read more here

Michele Obama's history reveals slavery

Embedded video from CNN Video

DIVORCE: Which Home for the Holidays

The holiday season is known for the time we all like to spend with the ones we love. But what about this obligation to choose with whom we'd rather spend our time, like our parents?

Who is "we"? We are children of separated families- divorced parents.

Growing up between two homes has been difficult, confusing and exhausting. It's been difficult having to travel from one house to another- across town, states, or country. We have to miss out on summer vacations with friends, birthday parties, and those fun 'once in a lifetime' moments.

Unfortunately, this is not the position nor decision we chose to make for our lives...it was made for us. Whether this decision was directly or indirectly made, a choice was provided and we had/have to oblige.

What's confusing is spending majority of our time with the custodial parent and their family, at the sacrifice of our visiting parent and their family. Those moments when spending time with the visiting parents' family becomes tense because you haven't seen them in years. Asking a distant relative,"how are the ladies doing across the street from you, that sit on the porch?" and finding out they have passed away years ago, is a rude awakening of how distant we can be from our separated families that were once united.

What makes things worse, is when parents cannot even be under the same roof together; when we have to hurt one parent in order to make the other parent happy, by 'selecting' which parent we'd 'rather' spend our time. This confusion only makes us want to be further away from home because we'd rather be by ourselves than hurt our parents that we love so much.

I find it common, personally, that when people 'fall in love' they have dreams and expectations of each other...and maybe, one day, children will be involved when the time is right. What exactly is the right time? Do 50% of our parents get married too early? Or did our parents make each other a priority above us? Did they decide to divide the family, because they didn't love each other anymore, therefore not allowing this family to exist? Did Mom or Dad not meet expectations to provide for the family?

I'm sure there are many justifiable reasons for divorce...a home is not a 'home' if the walls are not supporting the roof. Whatever the reason, "we" should take our current positions in consideration as we make further steps towards love, marriage and family, while keeping God first.

Some of us are blessed that we have not experienced such a division where we were "forced" to choose which parent to spend our holidays and seasonal breaks, at the expense of the other parent. Unfortunately a choice had to be made. We should be grateful for the relationship our parents created for our benefit. Although the marriage did not work out, the family is still able to exist.

I truly believe that once we decide to commit ourselves to our loved ones- in God's name- that we become a priority to each other at that point of marriage. As children are introduced into this union our priority shifts to the responsibility of managing the family, where the child comes before anything else. If divorce is the ONLY option in order to maintain a healthy family, then so be it.

I learned the secret to Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith's marriage is that they will not allow divorce to be an option to resolve any troubles in the relationship...only at death will they part...they promised God. Of course this is easier said than done, but it should be embodied by all of us.

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Kanye West

808 and Heartbreaks

don't forget to buy the album!

How strong is a man without his rib?

Someone once told me 'God made man. Unfortunately with societal changes (individualistic mentalities; i.e. People taking care of themselves), the man our fathers became, grew up in another era...as well as our mothers. This was an era where family traditions were more important than some liberties, where monogamy was backed by gold, where 'going steady' was something proud to say PUBLICLY, and where divorce was not at a 50% success rate (hmm, or maybe I'm describing our grandparents?)

More women are attending college, excelling in male dominated careers, becoming single parents, and being told to 'never to depend on anyone'...and then Hillary Clinton puts '18 million cracks in the glass ceiling.' The female gender role has progressed the most, while the dominate male gender has remained stagnant and/or deteriorating.

Today there is a strong disconnect; men and women have become more independent. But some how gender roles and expectations in relationships have remain pretty much the same.

The Dating Scene: although we have this "New Centennial Woman," with her own her money, that she is proud to say she earns!...but she still expects the man to pick up the tab. Even when our women are 'moving up in the world' the thought of going 'Dutch' has not been of presence in their mind. But why should it, after becoming accustomed to privileges growing up with their true provider, Pops...'Every man should show the same courtesy.'

Unfortunately "Little girl", the men that you are seeking are not planning to be your father...maybe a husband, but there are a few stages before that idea can ever be entertained, lol. Unlike your Old Man, the New Centennial Man/Dude/Boy is not going to volunteer to be your New Daddy. So be careful of expectations you place on your Equal, because he has expectations for you as well. Because he can lie to you, cheat on you, and leave you, like your Daddy won't. Don't set yourself up for disappointment, or try to fill a void that doesn't exist, because you already have a Daddy...you can never have two.

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

what if He press RESET on our lives...

So today was the most tension I have ever experienced in the work place. More tense then when my co-worker told me that 'there's no real reason to vote in the city of New York, and your vote does not really matter."

So we got a company update on up-coming changes taking place for Time Inc a few weeks ago. And ever since then, the topic on my floor has been...'so are we still going to have a job tomorrow?' and 'I wonder who's going to get axed.'

From Tritonslostboy

Although my team was assured that we will be fine, I just cannot accept it until this storm is over. For all I know, we could be in the 'eye' of this hurricane...while watching others' careers fly like debris while the turbulent winds slowly heads in my cubicle.

Reality hit me hard today, and put a lot into perspective. Although, I know and recognize that everything, everyday, every breath, every crowded subway trip to my stressful job is a BLESSING...

From Tritonslostboy

I truly believe God popped me upside the head, just make sure I'm a paying attention, and not sleeping on 'The Job.'

What hit home for me today was that:
1. I just graduated!
2. I'm 25 years old...and potentially getting laid off ALREADY!
3. Will I be able to live off of my emergency savings until I get another job?
4. How long will I and everyone else be out of a job?
5. Will there be other jobs available...considering 80,000 jobs are expected to be cut by the end of the year?
6. RENT! (not the musical)

I had/have this new vision of life...and what if it all went up with the wind and never to return...are we prepared for that? The route we take to get to work, the same people we see every morning, the same $5 Subway foot-long sandwiches we order, and the rude cashier lady, our annoying co-workers we don't want to see as soon as we get to work...the little behaviors that are second nature to us can all be RESET.

From Tritonslostboy

Just like accidentally erasing your computer's hard drive, I'm sure there were some important documents you may have lost, plus music and photos...but at the same time we would have to start on a clean slate. That would be hard to adjust for those who have become comfortable in their lifestyles, but also a rude awakening that we are put on this earth for a reason, and not to take anything for granted.

I have a hard time reminding myself not to get attached or too comfortable with my iPod and my digital camera because I cannot take these great devices to Heaven with me, as well as anything else on this earth. While we are on earth, there is 'Work' to be done, spiritually and professionally...and we can sleep, relax, get comfortable when we are called 'Home.'

I close with this...God has an ultimate will for us...our plans come from His blessings that allows us to anticipate a tomorrow- a future...

Time Inc is Bringing the Axe Out....

TIME Inc. today becomes not a publisher of magazines but of pink slips instead.
The magazine giant is expected to cut more than 250 from the payroll as part of an overall plan by Time Inc. The superficial characteristics (muscles, money, and more money) have become a luxury, and will soon fade with time, just as any new style that comes out.
------------------------
I would like to begin by letting you know 'Times are changing' and unfortunately, ladies, chivalry is not dead, but it is dying. Our society has become more focused on convenience therefore leading to laziness and selfishness. The 'virgin' is no longer desired as she used to be, because men don't want to deal with the consequences of the relationship (for whatever reason: 'I don't want to settle down,' 'she'll be clingy,' 'I can't commit,'...'she'll want to marry me!')
The 'drive thru' is quicker- get what you want and ROLL OUT. The food may suck, but it'll hold you over until the next meal. And if one place can't supply the meal, then the place across the street will do just fine....

From untitled

From when I was growing up, the gentleman opens the door for a woman...at ALL TIMES. I learned when going out with my mother and it was time to enter or exit a store, and she would sit and stare at the door, until I opened the door for her, and any other women following behind her. I later realized that it will become my responsibility as a man to provide the same courtesy to another 'woman of interest' or stranger.

There is no true definition of a gentleman.

From untitled

You can't point one out, but you can label one based on character. Can you judge his character if he doesn't open the car door for you? Probably not. Can you judge his character if he tells you that you have a booger hanging out of your face, or there's something in your teeth? Probably.
Does this mean women should lower their standards? Not at all, but women need to re-evaluate their priorities in what they want in a man. And can that woman meet the same expectations she places upon him ('Daddy's Little' Girl Complex: Part 2 of 2, coming soon).
The harsh reality is that women out number men; which means women can be disregarded easier, as men continue to look for convenience with the fewest compromises. The U.S. president, arguably the most powerful person in the world, has “historically” been an old, upper-class, white male. Many Americans never dreamed that the day would come when an African-American would hold this title because “historically,” minorities have experienced oppression and discrimination often supported by government officials and political leaders — including presidents. In fact, most of the early presidents were slave-owners themselves.

So should Barack Obama be exiled from the black community for accepting a position that has “historically” been racist against blacks? Of course not.

Yet, here on campus, one student organization has come under fire from some in the black community because its president chose to join an organization that was “historically” racist against students of color.

For over five years, the Black Volunteer Network has actively contributed to Black Welcome Week. But this summer, the community service-based organization found itself alienated from all Black Welcome Week-sponsored events because of its president’s membership in Order of Angell, a society of campus leaders previously known as Michigamua. This past summer, in a Salem Witch Hunt-esque town hall meeting, Gabrielle Sims — a senior in the Ross School of Business and the president of BVN — pleaded with several black leaders on campus to allow her organization to be recognized as a Black Welcome Week participant.

Eligible members of organizations participating in Black Welcome Week took part in a formal vote, and the final decision was that the Black Welcome Week committee would not endorse BVN.

The society formerly known as Michigamua has been a controversial subject on campus since it came under fire for its use of Native American rituals and artifacts in secret but integral parts of its ceremonies. Since then, the organization has repudiated such offensive practices, publicly disclosed the names of its members and changed its name in order to salvage its reputation and represent its move toward less offensive, more sensitive practices.

Cordaye Ogletree, the speaker of the Black Student Union and an LSA junior, explained his group’s criticisms of the group this way: “The Black Student Union does not support historically racist student organizations like Order of Angell because of their secrecy and their refusal to be a completely open and transparent organization.”

It is completely understandable that black students would be outraged by the disrespectful past of Michigamua, its successor Order of Angell and its members. But completely exiling a whole organization created to uplift the black community because of one person’s affiliation is divisive and detrimental to an already underrepresented community on campus.

In an evolving nation where a black man has been elected to the highest level of leadership in the country, it is disheartening to know that many black students often feel as if they are forced to choose between loyalty to their ethnicity and loyalty to their professional ambitions.

If black students at the University are ostracized for joining organizations that have past ties to racism and discrimination, then are black students at this school traitors to the black community because we opted to give thousands of dollars to a historically white institution rather than historically black colleges and universities? Are black families that move from the inner city into suburban areas selfish because their tax dollars are being spent to enhance an already advantaged community? Are black women who choose to join Delta Delta Delta over Delta Sigma Theta (the largest black sorority) any less black because of their affiliation?

Echoing Ogletree’s concerns about Order of Angell, Brandon Littlejohn, an LSA and School of Music senior and the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Epsilon Chapter, told me, “You cannot claim to serve us and we not have any say in how we are being served or how we are being helped.”

Brandon has a great point. But how do we have a say if we completely excommunicate ourselves from organizations that have been misguided? We miss out on teachable moments and opportunities to evoke change. We limit the possibilities to educate the broader society on the issues important in our community because we cannot simply expect to impact an organization if we don’t individually help make internal changes.

As Sims explained to me, this was the opportunity Order of Angell presented. “Order of Angell has given me a forum to improve campus by branching away from a segregated university community and by facilitating campus synergy,” she said.

At many white universities, black students were not allowed to live in on-campus housing and thus formed their own social organizations, like historically black fraternities and sororities, so that they could support one another. But now, as more and more leadership opportunities are opening up for black students in traditionally white institutions, we should use this as an opportunity to restructure a system that has negatively displaced African-Americans.

As black students, we should always strive to help progress the black community, but we cannot progress the community when we only discuss our problems among each other. The only way we can accomplish this is by knocking down walls and turning communal black issues into larger societal issues, even if this means we have to do it through organizations that have historically turned us away.

Shakira Smiler can be reached at stsmiler@umich.edu.

What's the beef? (edited)

The Black student body should be the strongest on a college campus, since they worked the hardest to gain higher education...in my opinion. The Black student body should be so strong in fact that nothing is able to break the bond. The same bond that was used in the Civil Rights protests, where they were beaten, spit on, chewed, dehumanized and murdered.

Just as 'steel sharpens steel' ...only the Black student body is strong enough to cause harm to itself. That bond that held so tightly to protect us in times of turmoil, can only be shattered from within. I guess we can call it low self esteem or depression.

A leading Black student organization asked the other day, "what's the beef?" for their up-coming program. This was after a hateful email was sent to the Black student body. The email was to embarrass a young lady for her decisions; and for her to be exiled by the Black community. Fortunately the Black student body replied in opposition to the sender of this hateful email, which lead to more students defending this young lady and her decisions she has made for herself.

What I find interesting is how this same organization who's main goal is the uplift and the progression of the Black student body has publicly announced (or whispered) not supporting another Black organization, because of the President's affiliation with an other group. This 'other group' has a negative history in which dealt with racism and discriminatory activity against people of color and other minorities. For what it's worth many institutions have been guilty of the same injustices:

The United States of America

The U.S. Presidency

The U.S. Government

Colleges and State Universities

Our neighbors

Fortunately, times have changed...and progress is being made. Maybe not at the pace we would like it to go, but forward steps are being made at the same time. Just as these times have changed, we see history being made... names, and faces are changing. Thurgood Marshall, Colin Powell, Barack Obama, Frederick Douglass, David Patterson, etc...are all changing the face of the same institutions that have caused injustices to the Black Community. These changes could not have been made with out individuals taking that step out of the their community and reaching for this new 'access to power,' 'access to knowledge,' 'access to experience.' These changes could not have been made without the support of their Black Community.

So the Black Student Organization 1 (BSO1), for years has vowed to not associate with the Order of Angell organization (formally Michiguama). The President of the BSO2 and many other Black student leaders were 'tapped' to join this formal secret society organization, and have chosen to become members. Unfortunately due to the O of A's history, and the BSO1's promise of disassociation...they have decided to not support the entire BSO2 unless the President surrenders her position.

Hmm...a Black organization closing their doors to another Black organization? Both offer a place of unity among the Black student body, but BSO1 finds the affiliation of one member of BSO2 with O of A is more compelling than keep the Black Community UNITED.

BSO1...What's the beef?...
The BLACK STUDENT ORGANIZATION...I said 'what's the beef?'

From untitled

Instead of dividing our Black Community, how about you support it. Allow our brothers and sisters to step out and gain this 'access' to possibly new opportunities. Let's remember the past, and move forward "Sankofa". And while our brothers and sisters are out making history, don't you dare close your door on them.

From untitled

BSO1...you ask 'what's the beef' and want to bring up dialogue on the isssues dividing our Black community, but you are committing the same self-destructing injustices. Jesse Jackson preached about change and progress, and got caught doing the opposite. BSO1, you are so powerful, and 'with great power comes great responsibility' (I got it from Spiderman).

From untitled

BSO1,

Stand for something or fall for anything, but be prepared to be left behind...and questioned just as Jesse Jackson was. There is a bigger picture here, and it goes beyond the college campus. A division within, is the worst thing that can happen to us. We have more important issues to confrontm, and we need as much support as we can get.
I love your organization, no matter what...but I disagree with your decision.
__________________________________________________________________
Q: So "Why do you care?....You're no longer relevant to the campus anymore.."

A: I care because I am an Alum of this same student body. I care because I care about Black folks. I thought that was enough.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tritonlb.blogspot.com/2008/11/bsu-jesse-jackson.html' title='What's the beef? Johnson for selling Black Entertainment Television. Then I had time to see Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married. I noticed Perry’s signature All-Black casting. For this movie, I saw faces I haven’t seen in YEARS…YEARS!! Michael Jai White! I haven’t seen him since Spawn, Malik Yoba- Cool Runnings and NYUndercover! Then Janet, haven’t seen her since her ok performance in Nutty Professor II. And the crazy chick… she was in House Party III playing a similar role, Tasha Smith. Whether they have been in more recent successful movies or the worst productions, I saw Perry as this great resource to display his art from paper, to stage-plays, to theatres. His success has given him and others so many opportunities.

So what does this have to do with Bob Johnson? I came to a realization that people DO IT for the passion or for the profit. Reading an article in Black Enterprise interviewing Bob Johnson and his success; he was asked why he sold BET. He responds saying that BET had many outside investors…and he had obligations to give his investors the maximum return, Viacom offered the highest. And had there been a minority company willing to pay as much, they could have made a deal. But there wasn’t.

So the end result, we have what some have called BET…Blacks Embarrassing Themselves. Did Bob Johnson bail out on us? For profit? What would have happened if he didn’t sell BET?
Lets talk about PROFIT. Lets make our decisions based on what our consumer demands…whatever is most profitable. T-Pain, Soulja Boy, Dream, Rhianna, and 50 Cent sells (not a group of the most talented performers, non-artists) are top selling. Real World, Survivor, Leguna Beach, America’s Next Top Model, The Real OC…high rated shows. We begin to see an increase in similar entertainment; superficial-reality shows, thug-computerized, leg insured music.

Back to BET…in its transition from B.J. to Viacom…Teen Summit, BET News, Caribbean Rhythms, Tavis Smiley begin to disappear. An increase in music videos, UNCUT (~3am), 106 & Park, College Hill, and this season’s Hot Ghetto Mess (later re-titled, “We have to do better…”) and Hell Date appear. All deemed profitable by Mr. Johnson and his trusty new owner, Viacom. In my opinion, this profitable decision, BLACK FACED the primary source of Black media that people like you and I desire to view.
Lets talk about PASSION. Lets make our decisions based on what we demand most gratifying. Maybe our educational system would be better. Lord knows our teachers aren’t doing this for the money, nor profit at that! Social workers, maybe our judicial, health care, and social security policies would take care of us more efficiently. Maybe Mos Def, Talib, and Common (solely examples…This is a later discussion) would be more respected and appreciated.

From my observation (I could be wrong, for once…but doubt it.) When I see T. Perry’s films, I feel like he is actually driven by passion. His passion led him to greater opportunities.*I’m assuming here, but he has not investors or ‘owners’ to tell him to make the most ‘profitable’ films/ plays.* I’m a jerk for this one, but I don’t think there is enough shoe polish and tap shoes in the world if BJ were to produce a film. And due to Perry’s passionate drive, he also opened doors….actually he PROPPED those bad-boys open! For more actors to perform…literally reviving Black Films.

I’m sure you BJ supporters are saying, ‘wait! BJ gives opportunities.’ I’m sure he does/is. Real estate, the Bobcats, gaming-entertainment business in the Caribbean (I wonder if there is cheaper labor in the islands…) are his new projects with RLJ Developments L.L.C. These are new great things to do and all, but will this passion for profit place Johnson’s new developments in the hands of the ‘top buyer’ like the BET situation. Or will Johnson find time and use some extra energy to open a door for his own Black businessmen…no matter the sacrifice!? Not necessarily discriminating to only the Black community, but giving guidance to the success that Johnson created. We see Perry and others propping doors open…and NOT opening/selling opportunities to the HIGHEST BUYER.

I will say this, I do not know what BJ or TP’s ultimate goals are. But as of now, seeing two leading, unstoppable Black men using their success for PROFIT or PASSION…I am disappointed that BET was sold to become more PROFITABLE…instead of PRICELESS. Hey, we still have TV-ONE to depend on!

So I was mad at Bob Johnson for his profitable decision with BET, but with his new $3 Billion he has opportunity to do whatever he ‘wants to do.’ I can’t be mad him for that!

Thanks Mark for not selling off FACEBOOK; that’s what MYSPACE is for…

**Denzel Washington did not want to be in Great Debaters. In order to get the financial support to create this film, he had to star in it…so he did. His response to Tavis Smiley, “Do what you have to do, to do what you want to do.”

Trite-flection:
I was at a point of stagnation. What do I want to do with my life? Money vs. Happiness. I’ve always wanted to be in more of a creative field…I ended up Advertisement Sales (irony). Choosing my happiness/passion, may not provide me with my own place, decent clothing, paying bills/saving, New Year’s Eve in NYC…a social life. So now I have decided to ‘do what I have to do, so I can do what I want to do.’
I’ve been co-hosting an online radio show recently on Sunday evenings, and have becoming interested in starting my own show. I love people, entertainment and enlightenment. This may be an avenue to pursue happiness.
